Since its inception, Sumitomo Forestry America, Inc. has been an integral part of Sumitomo Forestry's global strategy, rooted in a rich history of over six decades of engagement with the North American market.

In 1961, Sumitomo Forestry took its first step overseas with the establishment of the Seattle Representative Office in Washington State, marking the beginning of direct import and procurement of U.S. wood products. By April 1966, this office evolved into the Seattle Branch, serving as a pivotal hub for the importation of lumber from both the U.S. and Canada, with additional offices in Coos Bay and Vancouver established under its jurisdiction.

Recognizing the potential for growth and the importance of direct market presence, Sumitomo Forestry America, Inc. was formally established in June 1970. This newly formed company not only supported the import business into Japan but also marked the company's proactive approach to exploring new customer opportunities as a trading entity.

From 2003 onward, Sumitomo Forestry expanded its operations in Seattle, leveraging its strategic location for timber and building materials distribution. This expansion laid the foundation for entering the U.S. housing market, the largest in the world. Emphasizing integration with local culture, climate considerations, and construction methods unique to the U.S., Sumitomo Forestry introduced high-quality wooden housing solutions. This effort included acquiring equity interests in prominent local and regional builders, further solidifying its presence and commitment to sustainable development.

The year 2016 marked a significant milestone with the launch of the multi-family housing business, followed by strategic expansions in 2018 through mergers and acquisitions in land development and real estate companies focused on multi-family housing, commercial, and mixed-use properties. These initiatives not only diversified Sumitomo Forestry America's revenue streams but also strengthened its market position across various sectors.

Central to our strategy is the synergistic collaboration among Sumitomo Forestry and its affiliated companies. This collaboration is founded on mutual trust, shared business policies, and philosophies, ensuring effective integration of strengths across all group entities. Moreover, our commitment extends beyond business success to creating appropriate living environments that cater to the unique needs of local communities, fostering sustainable growth and development.

Looking ahead, Sumitomo Forestry America remains dedicated to expanding and evolving its businesses, driven by innovation, sustainability, and a deep-rooted commitment to enhancing the quality of life in every community we serve.
